This past weekend, the Anteater’s once again hosted the annual Anteater Regatta in conjunction with Newport Harbor Yacht Club. The team met with Charlie Underwood and Jenn Lancaster on Friday evening, after everyone finished their final exams, and discussed jobs for the weekend. After the short meeting, the team felt ready to manage the craziness of around 60 high school teams and celebrated the end of finals week with the second annual ugly Christmas sweater party.
Saturday morning began and the team was up at the break of dawn to bring boats across the harbor from the UCI sail base to NHYC for charter and to begin boat inspections. The high schoolers arrived from all over the state, and even a team from Washington, and were ready to compete. After the skippers meeting, the boats headed out to the glassy waters of Newport Harbor. On Saturday, a rotation and a half was completed in each division with an average of about 5 knots all day. Point Loma Varsity was beginning to prove to take gold fleet, followed closely by home team Newport Harbor Varsity, and Cathedral Catholic from San Diego.
This year, the anteaters went all out on gear sales and did things a little bit differently. Besides just selling the regular t-shirts, we also added sunglasses and stickers into the mix. Our t-shirts were knock-offs of the great California flag, adorned with an anteater instead of the Californian bear. The wayfarer style sunglasses had “anteater sailing” on the side, and by the end of the weekend everywhere you looked, a high school sailor had a pair on. Also, we had awesome stickers in the same design as surfboard “sex wax” which the high schoolers also liked. Huge thanks to alumni, Megan Pluth for her help designing and ordering all our team merchandise.
Sunday was similar to Saturday in the lack of breeze. The sun decided to shine all day and we were able to show the competitors what winter (or the lack of it) is really like in Newport Beach. Boats were postponed on shore until just after noon when we were able to see a few puffs trickling down the peninsula. We were able to complete two more races in each fleet to get a total of 5 races for the regatta. Point Loma Varsity came out strong in Gold fleet, getting a total of 7 points for the day, and 27 for the regatta, putting them in first by a huge gap of 34 points. Silver fleet was a bit closer, with Newport Harbor High JV3 winning by 14 points over Loyola.
One more anteater down for the UCI sailing team! We would like to send a huge thank you to Jenn Lancaster and Charlie Underwood for all their help throughout the regatta. Also thanks to PRO Scott Mason, to Caleb Silsby, Matt McKinlay, and Adam Deermount for taking on the protests both days, Emlie Barkow for running scores (and anything else) from the race committee boats to the scoring office, to Mike Segerblom for bringing extra charter boats from the US Sailing Center, and to Newport Harbor Yacht Club for generously allowing us to use their facilities. This regatta would not be possible without support from NHYC and it’s members! Thank you!
