UCI Sailing Team Restructuring as a "Club" Team

Posted by Anteater Sailing Team on August 5, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Former members of the UC Irvine (UCI) met with head coach Mike Pinckney today todiscuss future plans for the nationally ranked sailing team.  The group decided to pursue options withinthe Department of Campus Recreation and drop the program to a Club Sportinstead of trying to rejoin the UCI Athletic Department.

Andy Beeckman ‘97, Danielle Richards ’09 and Head Coach Pinckney evaluated options fromthe UCI Athletic Department and Campus Recreation Department and felt thatseparating from athletics would be better in the long run although the initialrestrictions would be difficult.

To make a smooth transition, a 5 member Alumni Advisory Committee has been createdto oversee operations and fundraising/financials for the team.  The team still has its fleet of 8 CFJ’s,practice sails (usable but needing replacement), and Suburban for towing andtrailers.  They will need to fundraiseapproximately $50,000 a year to compensate for the lost athletic departmentoperation funding/coach salary and are pursuing options to accomplish that.

Alumni, friends, business and local community members are encouraged to assist in anyway possible from direct monetary donations, mileage donations for airfare, housing, gas cards, and gifts-in-kind (regatta housing, coaching,legal/financial services).  Immediatesponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact anteatersailingteam@gmail.com.
