This past weekend (Oct. 19 & 20) the UCI sailing team went up to Treasure Island for our first norcal regatta of the year. We brought 10 sailors, old and new, some of which it was their first regatta.
Saturday started out light with A on the water for almost 2 hours drifting around before they could get their first race off. Finally, the wind filled in, building to about 15 knots in the afternoon, and 5 races were sailed in each division. Sunday looked like it was going to start very similar to Saturday but the fog burned off quickly and the wind was steady throughout the day. Four races were sailed in each division on Sunday, getting the last race in B started seconds before the time limit!
Varsity A was sailed by skipper Nick Weis and crews Shan Wu and Philip Tagatac. Varsity B was sailed by skipper Sam Heller and crew Kathryn Benight, who placed fifth in their division and even won one of their races! JV A was sailed skipper Kate Andersen, who skippered her first coed regatta in two years and B was skippered by Ellen Suder, one of our strong upcoming skippers. Blake Terry, Paul Traverso, Mahmoud Sharif, all took turns crewing in JV.
Overall we placed 14th out of 27 in varsity and 13th out of 17 in JV. Everyone learned a lot, had a great time, and looking forward to our next regatta. Scores can be found at http://scores.collegesailing.org/f13/stoney-burke/ .
Congrats to the University of Hawaii for winning the event. Thanks to the CAL sailing team for hosting an awesome regatta and to all the bay area parents who gave us more food than we knew what to do with and housing for the weekend!
