The new school year has officially begun and the UCI sailing team is already hard at work! It is only week 1, and we have already have several events under our sleeve...
A few weekends ago, Sept 21-22, Skipper Sam Heller, middle man James Heller, and bow Kate Andersen headed down to San Diego before week 0 even began for the Autumn Match Race Invite at SDYC. There we sailed against a team from USC, CSULB, some club members, and even one of our favorite alumni, Rex Cameron. It was our first regatta together as a match racing team, and it definitely showed. In a couple weeks we have match race PCC's, so this was the perfect platform for us to practice and see how well we work together, how well we understand match racing, and point out some very obvious factors as a boat that we need to work on. We went in with a few goals for the weekend -- win a few starts, win a race, and get some sweet pictures to update the website with. We proudly completed all of these goals. Although we finished 6th out of 6 teams who competed, we won 2 of our matches, and were leading the race off the starting line in several races. Throughout the weekend our kite work improved immensely, and everything throughout the boat was ten times more smooth then when we began. And we even won the ship shape/best cleaned boat award to finish off the weekend strong!
The following day, the team hung out in Aldrich Park all day with an FJ and a table for the Anteater Involvent Fair. There we got about 150 email sign ups of students interested in joining the team, and about 40 new members showed up to an intro/fun-day sail we had the following Saturday to see what the team is all about! We have spent the last couple days doing a little more boothing on Ring Road on campus, and found a few more solid members to join our crew. We are all very pleased with the success of recruitment for Fall 2013 so far, especailly after loosing some of our favorite members to the REAL WORLD when they graduated this past spring. We will be starting open practices to new members next week, and continuing our regular Monday meetings at 5:30pm at the ARC in the Team Room each week. This weekend we are sending several of our returning team members down to Frosh/Soph regatta at MBYC hosted by the UCSD team, and coming up quickly is Stoney Burke Regatta in San Francisco.
If you are intersted in joining the team, get in touch with any of our officers (see "email list" tab above), and find us on Facebook! If you are an alumni who is interested in helping out or reliving your college days by getting some time in an FJ, we always welcome you to come down to practice!
Wish us luck in the upcoming season! ZOT ZOT ZOT.
