Last weekend, the UC Irvine sailing team traveled all the way up to St. Francis Yacht Club based just east of the Golden Gate Bridge to sail in the St. Francis Invitational. The team battled 25-knot winds and extremely heavy current and waves in a very competitive fleet to pull out a sixth place overall out of 27, qualifying for Pacific Coast Championships. Nick Weis and Daniel Diaz fought hard in A-fleet sailing most of their races on Saturday in high winds with an ebbing current pulling off an outstanding ninth place. Samuel Heller skippering and Brian MacLean crewing ended up being a successful team in B-fleet finishing with a rewarding sixth place. Kourtney Roland also tagged along as our light-wind alternate. This regatta was a reminder to us, Newport sailors, of some of the more extreme conditions of college sailing and the values of being able to out-hike the competition. This was an amazing experience for the five of us that attended with it being the last time seniors Sam Heller, Nick Weis, and Daniel Diaz will sail at St. Francis in college sailing. We wish the best of luck to the team at PCCs and smooth sailing.
